Kenya braces for widespread heavy rains, flood-prone areas on alert
Kenyans across several regions have been put on alert after the Kenya Meteorological Department warned of widespread rainfall expected to affect large parts of the country.
In a weather advisory shared on X on Sunday, December 28, 2025, the department outlined areas likely to experience rain over 24 hours, raising concerns for residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas. The advisory comes at a time when many people are travelling, hosting family gatherings, or engaging in outdoor activities during the festive season, making weather conditions a matter of public safety and daily planning.

The forecast, issued by the national weather agency, covers a period starting on the morning of December 28, 2025, through the morning of December 29, 2025. According to the department, rainfall activity is expected to be fairly widespread, affecting both urban and rural areas. The warning urges members of the public to remain cautious, particularly in regions that are historically prone to flooding, poor drainage, or landslides during periods of sustained rain.
“Weather Forecast valid from 0900 hrs 28th to 0900 hrs December 29, 2025,” the statement reads
The Kenya Met Department noted that the rainfall is expected to occur across multiple regions, a development that could disrupt transport, farming activities, and normal business operations. In urban centres such as Nairobi, heavy rain often leads to traffic congestion, flooded roads, and challenges for pedestrians, while in rural areas, the impact can be felt through damaged roads and affected farmlands.

“Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country during the period from 0900 hrs on 28th December 2025 to 0900 hrs on 29th December 2025, as illustrated in the forecast map,” the statement reads
The advisory lists several regions likely to receive rainfall, highlighting both highland and lowland areas. This wide coverage means millions of Kenyans could experience wet conditions within the forecast period, underscoring the need for preparedness at both household and county levels.
“Areas likely to receive rainfall include: The Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coastal region,” the statement reads

The department also emphasised safety, urging residents to stay alert, especially where rain may persist or intensify. In past seasons, such conditions have led to flash floods, overflowing rivers, and damage to property, particularly in informal settlements and areas with poor drainage systems.
“Residents in areas experiencing persistent or heavy rainfall are advised to remain alert, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas,” the statement reads
As the rains set in, Kenyans are encouraged to monitor official updates, plan travel carefully, and take necessary precautions to protect lives and property during the forecast period.
