KDF officer withdraws Ksh1M land surety for daughter’s boyfriend
An Eldoret court has allowed a request by a military officer to take back his land title deed worth Sh1 million he had deposited as security in court to secure the freedom for his daughter’s boyfriend who is accused of fraud related charges.
Stephen Kipyego, the KDF officer told Senior Principal Magistrate Onkoba Mogire that he was no long-er interested in standing the surety of the accused, Jacob Kipserem and requested to be given back his land document.
“Your honour I have come to demand for my land title deed back and let the suspect carry his own cross. I am not interested in standing surety for him any longer as he has shown that he is not an hon-est person,” he said.
Detained in prison
Kipserem (pictured) is accused of conning Shadrack Kibunguch Sh960,000 with the promise of securing a job in the military for his son.
Kipserem is said to have obtained the cash money from Kibunguchy using false pretence on diverse dates between November 3, 2021 and December 3, 2021 at Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu county.
He was arraigned in court three year ago in connection with the offence and denied the charge.
The KDF officer accepted to stand surety for the suspect by depositing his Sh1 million worth land title deed to secure his release from police cells after his daughter, who was in relationship with him, inter-vened.
Warrant of arrest
But soon after gaining his freedom, the suspect fled from Uasin Gishu County forcing the court to issue a warrant of arrest against him.
This was after failed to appear in court for more than two years for trial of his fraud related case.
Kipserem was apprehended by a team of police detectives following a tip off from members of the public in his hide out in one of the South Rift region towns where he had sought refuge.
Kipserem, in his defence said that he did not know that he was required to appear in court for the dates he was given since he was far away from home in search of greener pasture.
But his ruling, the Magistrate declared Kipserem a flight risk and ordered him to be detained at Eldoret GK remand prison pending the hearing and determination of his fraud case.
