KCB bank fourth win in Kenya Cup
Former Kenya Cup champions KCB secured their fourth consecutive win of the season after thrashing Nakuru RFC 45-10 in the local rugby league fixture staged at the Nakuru Athletics Club.
Kakamega-based side and the current Kenya Cup defending champions Kabras Sugar also secured the much-needed win ahead of the festive season.
Fast-rising Menengai Oilers secured a routine win with varsity side Catholic Monks spoiling an early Christmas gift for Mwamba RFC.
In the KCB game, Nakuru opened the scoring taking an early lead after a penalty conversion to give the hosts a three-point lead.
However, the Curtis Olago coached side would go on to showcase their intent with a well-oiled move orchestrated by scrum-half Samuel Asati slicing through the Nakuru guard like a double-edged sword on hot butter to score a superb try for the bankers.
Kenyan international Martin Owila and Patrick Ouko would follow suit with the duo edging their names in the scoresheet with the ever-present and experienced Darwin Mukidza converting the extras for a 21-10 lead with the hooter indicating the half-time break.
KCB would kick-start from where they left with Michael Kimwele’s scoring a double to cool off things in the heated encounter.
Top position
Youngster Elvis Olukusi and utility back Brian Wahinya’s tries were enough to showcase the Banker’s intent of reclaiming the Kenya cup title.
The win for the Olago side sees the former champions cement their top position at the top of the log with the league taking a break ahead of the festive season.
KCB proceeds for the Christmas break and will face Kenyatta University Blak Blad in their next fixture at the Ruaraka Sports club on 7th January 2023.
In another Kenya Cup fixture, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) missed clear opportunities including eight penalties which saw them taught valuable rugby lessons by Kabras Sugar who secured a 21-0 win to keep close tabs on their rivals KCB rugby.
The match between Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad and Strathmore Leos at Kenyatta University ground failed to kick off under unclear circumstances.
According to close sources, Strathmore Leos approached Kenyatta University’s management to postpone the match to allow them to attend the East Africa University Games, but the club claimed not to be aware of the changes.
Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) is set to make a ruling on the matter in due time.
At the Jamhuri Park, Oilers inflicted Homeboyz to their second consecutive loss, touching down five tries with winger John Okoth claiming a brace for a 37- 22 win over the Deejays. Ngong road-based side Kenya Harlequins claimed their first win over Varsity side Mean Machine with a 43-20 convincing win for the Paul Murunga-coached side.
