Karua honours Bishop Sulumeti, highlights his lessons in constitutional reforms
People’s Liberation Party (PLP) Leader Martha Karua has paid tribute to Bishop Emeritus Philip Sulumeti, remembering his pivotal role in Kenya’s constitutional reform and his enduring impact on both the religious and national spheres.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Karua said her condolences went out to the family, friends, and the Catholic Church following Bishop Sulumeti’s passing. She reflected on his leadership during a critical period in Kenya’s political history.
“Bishop Sulumeti will be remembered for chairing the drafting committee during the formalisation of the constitutional review process in 1998. I was privileged to be joint secretary of this committee alongside Wanjiku Kabira,” she stated

Martha Karua highlighted the committee’s lasting contributions to Kenya’s governance structures.
“It is the Sulumeti committee that came up with the three-tier structure of review, that is, the commission, district forums and national forum, which became a permanent feature of the review process as well as the one-third gender principle,” she said. These reforms laid the foundation for public participation in constitutional matters and reinforced gender inclusivity in national leadership.

Karua further praised Bishop Sulumeti’s leadership, describing it as transformative across both religious and socio-political spheres.
“Bishop Sulumeti’s leadership impacted both the religious sector and the national social-political spheres. His guidance and humility left an indelible mark on Kenya’s public life, inspiring those who worked alongside him to prioritise integrity, inclusivity, and citizen engagement, ” she stated

The statement concluded with a heartfelt tribute to the late bishop, recognising his lifelong service. “We have lost a distinguished and humble servant of God. Rest In Peace, Bishop Sulumeti,” Karua wrote.
Bishop Sulumeti’s passing is a significant loss to both the church and the country, but his legacy in constitutional reform and ethical leadership continues to serve as a guide for Kenya’s leaders and citizens alike.
His role in institutionalising participatory review processes and championing gender equity remains a milestone in Kenya’s democratic journey.
