Local golf clubs heightened measures to ensure players and caddies were safe against the coronavirus pandemic as action resumed in selected clubs for the first time since March when the government banned all sporting activities as a way of containing the virus spread.
At Ruiru Sports Club, where they hosted their July Monthly Mug competition at the weekend, players had to adhere to the strict rules, first having their temperatures checked upon arrival, washing hands and having to sanitise frequently at selected points.
They played a four-ball but each carried his or her own bag as theere were no caddies on the first day.
“We had a large field of 180 players and they all finished playing in good time, thanks to the ball spotters that we used to help spot the ball and increase the pace of the game.
There were no caddies but we had one ball spotter for every four ball,” said Ruiru Sports Club captain Thomas Mwaura.
Joseph Karienye playing off handicap 10 emerged the overall winner of the day-long competition after carding 21 stableford points in the front nine and 20 in the back nine for a total of 41.
