Kaluma: US should set up Ebola quarantine centre in Kenya
By Emmanuel Rono, May 29, 2026Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has called on the United States of America to urgently establish the proposed Ebola quarantine and treatment centre in Kenya, warning that the country must strengthen preparedness against possible outbreaks.
In a statement on his X account on Friday, May 29, 2026, Kaluma argued that in an increasingly interconnected world, infectious diseases can spread rapidly across borders, making early preparedness critical.

“The United States of America should set up that Ebola Quarantine Centre in Kenya as soon as possible. The world is a global village. Ebola will reach Kenya,” Kaluma stated.
Kaluma added that Kenya should move quickly to prepare its health systems to respond effectively to any potential outbreak, with support from international partners.
“The faster we ready the Nation to fight it with the support of the United States and other capable partners, the better,” Kaluma stated.
Ebola facility in Kenya
The Trump administration is expected to deploy United States public health officers to Kenya to staff a potential quarantine facility there amid the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The facility, which was pending approval from the Kenyan government as of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, is intended for Americans who have been exposed to or at high risk of testing positive for the virus in the region, as well as those who test positive, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Some members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, a uniformed branch under the Department of Health and Human Services, have received notices to deploy, the report said.
Kenya’s readiness to fight the virus
President William Ruto has called for strengthened international cooperation to contain the spread of Ebola, warning that public health threats require coordinated global action and cannot be contained through isolationism.

According to a statement on his X account on Thursday, May 28, 2026, after a high-level meeting at State House, Nairobi, with ambassadors, development partners and multilateral agencies, Ruto said Kenya is working closely with regional and global institutions to enhance preparedness and response amid outbreaks reported in neighbouring countries.
He noted that Kenya, as a regional gateway and financial hub hosting major international organisations, remains on high alert and is actively strengthening surveillance systems at Points of Entry across the country.
“International solidarity is vital, particularly in times of multiple crises. As a key regional gateway, financial hub, and host to major international organisations, Kenya remains vigilant and committed to swift, coordinated action to protect regional health security following the Ebola outbreak in neighbouring countries,” Ruto said.
