President William Ruto has called for strengthened international cooperation to contain the spread of Ebola, warning that public health threats require coordinated global action and cannot be contained through isolationism.

According to a statement on his X account on Thursday, May 28, 2026, after a high-level meeting at State House, Nairobi, with ambassadors, development partners and multilateral agencies, Ruto said Kenya is working closely with regional and global institutions to enhance preparedness and response amid outbreaks reported in neighbouring countries.

He noted that Kenya, as a regional gateway and financial hub hosting major international organisations, remains on high alert and is actively strengthening surveillance systems at Points of Entry across the country.

“International solidarity is vital, particularly in times of multiple crises. As a key regional gateway, financial hub, and host to major international organisations, Kenya remains vigilant and committed to swift, coordinated action to protect regional health security following the Ebola outbreak in neighbouring countries,” Ruto said.

Screened cases

According to the president, surveillance and screening measures have been intensified at 26 points of entry, where more than 58,000 travellers have so far been screened.

All suspected cases tested have returned negative results, offering early reassurance on the country’s current status. In addition, 17 isolation centres have been identified nationwide to support emergency response capacity.

“I am pleased that surveillance and screening measures have been intensified across 26 Points of Entry, with more than 58,000 travellers screened and all suspected cases tested so far returning negative. In addition, 17 isolation centres have been identified across the country,” Ruto said.

Ruto further said Kenya is mobilising support with international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), and the United Nations system to strengthen laboratory systems, cross-border coordination, emergency response mechanisms and health preparedness.

He appreciated diplomatic missions and international partners from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union member states, China, Japan, India, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Türkiye for their continued engagement and support.

“We agreed on the importance of cooperation and avoiding isolationism, recognising that public health threats do not respect borders,” he said, underscoring the need for collective regional and global action.
