Homa Bay Town Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has revealed why he cannot take up a Cabinet Secretary position in President William Ruto’s government if he is offered one.

Taking to his official X account on Monday, July 22, 2024, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker stated that he does not need the said position in his life.

Kaluma on his role

According to Kaluma, representing his constituents, which they entrusted to him, is more powerful than serving in any other position.

The lawmaker went ahead to note that, as a leader, he has been praying for a stable Kenya founded on national values and principles of governance as outlined in Article 10 of the Kenyan Constitution.

“I don’t want to be Cabinet Secretary. Nothing is more powerful than the role of representation our people have entrusted to me.

“As a leader, I always pray for a stable Kenya founded on the National Values and Principles of Governance – Article 10. God bless Kenya,” Kaluma stated.

Article 10 of the constitution

According to Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya, the national values and principles of governance include patriotism, national unity, sharing and devolution of power, the rule of law, democracy, and the participation of the people.

Others are human dignity, equity, social justice, inclusiveness, equality, human rights, non-discrimination and protection of the marginalised, good governance, integrity, transparency, and accountability; and
sustainable development.

Ruto’s Cabinet

MP Kaluma’s statement comes amid an ongoing debate on President Ruto’s pick of his second batch of Cabinet Secretaries after nominating eleven CSs.

Speculations are rife that the remaining batch may include ODM party leader Raila Odinga’s picks as part of the two leaders’ agreement before engaging in a people-centred dialogue to quell the unrest being witnessed in the country.

President Ruto nominated a first batch of eleven individuals who will form his new cabinet on Friday, July 19, 2024, in which six former Cabinet Secretaries were featured.

President Ruto revealed that the move marks a notable shift in assisting in the transformation of the country.
