Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has defended President William Ruto amid mounting criticism over the government’s response to Kenya’s growing unemployment crisis.

Speaking on Friday, July 11, 2025, on his X account, Kaluma acknowledged the economic strain facing millions of Kenyans but cautioned that the roots of the unemployment problem go deeper than the current administration.

He argued that long-standing structural imbalances and historical underinvestment across many regions have contributed significantly to the jobs crisis.

Kaluma warned that ongoing protests, sparked by public frustration over the cost of living and lack of opportunities, risk driving away investors at a critical time for the country’s economy.

“Protests may feel like an outlet for anger, but we must be cautious. Disruptions create an unstable environment, and no serious investor will put money into a country in turmoil. If investors pull out, unemployment will only get worse,” Kaluma’s statement read.

He urged Kenyans to support efforts by the government to create a stable and predictable business climate that encourages both local and foreign investment.

According to Kaluma, political calm and national unity are vital for job creation, especially in underdeveloped regions.

This comes as President Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling unemployment through long-term economic reforms and investment in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, housing, and digital technology.

The Head of State recently announced new plans aimed at creating millions of jobs for young people, including through affordable credit, skills training, and public-private partnerships.

Jobless society?

“The government is working around the clock to create jobs, not just for the present generation but also for the future. Let us give these efforts a chance instead of fueling chaos that will only delay our progress,” the MP noted.

Kaluma emphasised the need for equitable development and called on leaders and citizens alike to prioritise unity and stability over political confrontation.

Ruto questioned claims that youth unemployment in the country is a problem unique to his administration.

Speaking in Kilimani, Nairobi, on Wednesday, July 2025, the president pushed back at critics, asking whether joblessness had begun only after he took office.

“I want to ask you, do you mean to tell me that all young people had jobs before I became president? You mean to tell me that unemployment came into play when I became president?” Ruto posed.

He said unemployment among the youth has long existed, and it is unfair to suggest that his government created the problem.

Instead, he said, his administration is the first to take deliberate steps to address it.
