By , September 28, 2025

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has intensified pressure on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to provide a clear roadmap for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Speaking at the Jesus Exaltation Centre in Orkinos, Olooloitikosh, Kajiado County, on September 28, 2025, alongside co-principals Rigathi Gachagua and Eugene Wamalwa, Musyoka stressed the need for transparency.

“I want IEBC to provide taarifa leo waonyeshe exactly how they are going to undertake the Continuous Registration,” he said, urging the commission to outline precise plans to ensure a smooth process.

Kalonzo’s call comes after former Chief Justice Maraga launched a drive to register 5 million new voters.

Youth participation

Musyoka called on young Kenyans to register in large numbers, expressing enthusiasm for their involvement. “Tungetaka vijana wakijitokeza kwa wingi wafanye laini kuanzia kesho, mimi na wenzangu tutaenda kuwashangilia,” he said, pledging to support and cheer on new voters.

He also addressed potential obstacles to registration, saying, “If anyone will have issues with the transportation fee, we want to know because we expect zaidi ya vijana 6M wasajiliwe kama wapiga kura.”

His remarks underscored the drive to mobilise more than six million young people to register ahead of the 2027 General Election.

IEBC outlines services under CVR

In a statement on X on September 27, 2025, the IEBC said the CVR exercise is a constitutional mandate under Article 88, requiring continuous voter enrolment and regular updates to the voter roll.

The commission detailed services including new voter registration, correction of personal details, transfer of registration, and verification. These services will be available at constituency offices except in areas where by-elections are ongoing. Eligible voters must be Kenyan citizens aged 18 or older, possess a valid ID or passport, and have no recent election-related convictions or mental incapacity declarations.

Diaspora voting

Musyoka also highlighted the role of Kenyans in the diaspora in strengthening democracy. Speaking at the Born Again Evangelism Church in Ruai Shamata on September 27, 2025, he noted that over two million Kenyans abroad, especially in Qatar, Dubai, and the U.S., are eager to vote but limited by a few voting centres. He urged the IEBC to expand access, saying “Wanataka sasa visambazwe.”

A TIFA survey released on September 24, 2025, showed only 18 per cent of Kenyans are “very confident” in the IEBC’s ability to conduct free and fair elections, down from 58 per cent in August 2022.
