Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has pinned his hopes on Kenyans living abroad, saying their numbers could make a big difference in shaping the country’s democracy.

Speaking during the grand opening of Born Again Evangelism Church at Ruai Shamata stage on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Kalonzo said Kenyans in the diaspora are eager to play a role in their country’s future. He pointed out that more than two million Kenyans live and work overseas, and their involvement in elections would help strengthen democratic processes.

“Siku hizi wakenya wanashiriki sana mahala popote walipo ulimwenguni wanashiriki mambo yao nyumbani,” he said, showing the need to expand opportunities for diaspora participation.

Currently, voting for Kenyans abroad is limited to a few centres in cities such as Washington and London. Kalonzo said this was not enough, considering the growing number of citizens living and working in other regions, particularly in the Middle East and North America.

“And kama vile ndugu yangu Eugene amesema, kuanzia jumatatu, all the diasporants. Tunajua wanataka watu wa diaspora kawaida wanapiga kura in Washington, I think in London; vituo vichache sana. Wanataka sasa visambazwe,” he said.

He highlighted the many Kenyans working in Qatar, Dubai, and the United States, noting that their voices should not be left out of the democratic process.

“Mtashangaa sana wakenya walio ngambo na kwingineko. Kwanza wale wako hapa upande wa Qatar na Dubai wakifanya kazi na Emirates, wengine Qatar Airways na wengine, na wale wako Marekani. Tumeskia rafiki yetu wa kutoka Atlanta Georgia, na wale wengine. Ni wengi zaidi ya millioni mbili,” he added.

Kalonzo said that if these citizens register and vote, they will make Kenya’s democracy stronger.

“Na hao wakishiriki. Mambo ya uchaguzi. Kuimarisha demokrasia ya nchi yao tutaona kwamba mungu atatuonyesha vile mampenzi yake yalivyo,” he told the gathering.

IEBC resumes voter registration

His call comes just as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) from Monday, September 29. The exercise will take place in all constituency offices except in areas with ongoing by-elections.

IEBC said the registration is part of its mandate to maintain an updated and credible voter roll, which is vital for transparent and inclusive elections. Services will include new voter registration, correction of details, transfer of registration, and verification of voter information.

Kenyans can also confirm their records through the online portal. To qualify, one must be a citizen aged 18 years and above with a valid ID or passport. However, those convicted of election offences in the last five years or declared of unsound mind are not allowed to register.

The commission has urged newly eligible voters, as well as those who have moved or changed polling stations, to make use of this window early.

IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon has repeatedly said that a credible register is central to free and fair elections. He reminded Kenyans that democracy begins with registration and that every vote counts.
