While visiting the late Raila’s family at Opoda Farm on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Kalonzo Musyoka, before beginning his address and tribute, first decided to bless the son of his late political ally, whom he supported three times in his quest for the presidency.

Kalonzo Musyoka invited Raila Junior to come forward so he could hand him what he referred to as “instruments of power”, symbolically meaning that as the eldest son, he is expected to take over from where his father left off.

Kalonzo added that the gesture was meant to act as a link between the Kamba region, which had heavily supported Raila, and the Nyanza region, which was his stronghold.

The instruments

Kalonzo first handed Junior a bow and arrows, which he said were meant to guard the territory left behind by his late father. After receiving them, Junior was shown how to shoot and asked to demonstrate, marking the beginning of his new symbolic role.

He was also given a small stool, which he was instructed to sit on while holding the bow and arrow, symbolising his duty to guard his father’s legacy as the eldest and only son. He was further given a shield, representing his role as a protector of his family and community.

Kalonzo then handed him a fly whisk, an item that was synonymous with his late father and was even buried with him.

According to Kalonzo, the instruments of power were to be used by Raila Junior to guard the entire community, extending from his father’s, his grandfather Jaramogi Oginga’s, the entire Luo nation, and Kenya at large.

“Hii utatumia kulinda jamii ya Raila, ya Jaramogi, ya Wajaluo na wa Kenya kwa ujumla,” Kalonzo declared.

Kalonzo went on to express his confidence in Raila Junior, saying that he believes Junior is up to the task of taking over from where his father left off.

Kalonzo Musyoka also handed a walking stick to James Orengo, which was officially handed to him by a Kamba elder.

Earlier coronation

This comes days after Junior was crowned as the family head on the fourth day after his father’s burial.

The event, held at Opoda Farm, saw him receive almost similar instruments except that he was given a spear instead of a bow and arrow. He was also shaved to signify the end of the mourning period.

The event was overseen by his uncle and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, who clarified that the takeover marked Junior’s familial succession and was not political.
