Kalonzo demands clarity from IEBC over fresh voter registration requirement
Wiper Patriotic Front Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has challenged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to explain why it made the decision to make some voters who had already registered to register again.
The leader of the opposition called the move “mischievous” and questioned how open the commission’s current plans are.
Speaking on Sunday, April 5, 2026, after church service at Deliverance Church International, Lang’ata, Kalonzo questioned the previous elections and their credibility based on the current call for re-registration.

Kalonzo pointed out that this requirement seems to contradict itself because these same people were allowed to vote in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 general elections.
“They say anybody who voted before 2012 should go and register again. Do they not realise, IEBC, those same voters voted in 2013, they voted in 2017, they voted in 2022, and they were registered voters, so what exactly are you trying to do?” Kalonzo said.
IEBC on voter re-registration
Kalonzo’s remarks come amid the directives by the IEBC that announced progress in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise while clarifying that Kenyans who registered before 2012 must enrol afresh to be included in the current biometric register.
In a statement shared on X on Friday, April 3, 2026, the commission said the current biometric Register of Voters (RoV) came into operation in 2012 after the promulgation of the 2010 constitution.

“The current biometric Register of Voters (RoV) came into operation in 2012 upon the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010; the enactment of the Elections Act, which introduced biometric voter registration as a key electoral reform measure and boundaries delimitation of 2012,” the statement read in part.
According to Kalonzo, the opposition will meet on Tuesday to deliberate on the matter and give a way forward.
“We are convening to actually deal with this matter because we think it is marks of mischief and lack of transparency,” Kalonzo said.
Opposition leaders on re-registration
The People’s Liberation Party leader, Martha Karua, on April 4, 2026, slammed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) over the re-registration. She accused the IEBC of punishing Kenyans for administrative failures.
On her part, Karua explained that IEBC’s administrative failures have turned into a burden for Kenyans.
“Your right to vote is not conditional. It is guaranteed under Article 38 of our Constitution. Kenyans cannot be punished for administrative failures within the IEBC,” Karua stated.

Safina Party leader and businessman Jimi Wanjigi further disputed this assertion, pointing out that Kenya undertook a comprehensive biometric voter registration exercise ahead of the 2013 and 2017 general elections.
“All Kenyan voters were registered afresh through BVR and later KIEMS in 2012 ahead of the 2013 and 2017 polls. Subsequently, all new voters have been enlisted in a similar manner,” he said, before adding, “IEBC, your nonsense!”
