Kakamega: Police intercept car after dramatic chase, seize suspected stolen livestock

One person of interest has been arrested, and three heads of cattle suspected to have been stolen have been recovered following a police chase in Khwisero Sub-county, Kakamega County.

According to the National Police Service (NPS) on July 7, 2026, the incident unfolded in the early hours when officers from Khwisero Police Station manning a vehicle checkpoint at Khumusalaba Junction intercepted a suspicious vehicle travelling from the Mumias–Ekero direction towards Buyangu.

Police said the driver made a sudden U-turn after spotting the checkpoint in what officers described as an attempt to evade arrest, prompting an immediate pursuit.

“On spotting the police checkpoint, the driver abruptly made a sharp U-turn in an apparent attempt to evade the officers, prompting the team to immediately pursue the vehicle,” the NPS said in a statement.

How the officers managed the situation

The chase ended in the Mushiangubu area after the fleeing vehicle lost control, veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

Officers arrested one of the occupants at the scene, while two other persons of interest escaped into a nearby thicket.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of three head of cattle believed to have been stolen.

“The animals were safely recovered and escorted to Khwisero Police Station, where they are currently being kept pending identification and collection by their rightful owners,” the police said.

The person of interest was arrested as investigations continue to identify and apprehend the two who escaped.
