The Government yesterday warned politicians against politicising the Covid-19 vaccination exercise for their own political gains.

Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe also warned against the issuance of vaccines outside Government designated facilities the habit could be fatal.

He said it was regrettable  some people are taking political advantage of a serious issue; a situation he said was immoral, unacceptable but also disturbing.

“It is really the worst and the lowest that an individual can get to. I want to urge the political class of whatever level that it is getting to a point that you are frustrating us as the Ministry of Health.

We cannot have this nonsense of three steps forward and then come back to the place we were before,” said Kagwe in a press conference at Afya House.

“We have no bed capacity, our isolation facilities are full yet people still continue causing crowds to come together.

We cannot continue like this! We saw it in Kiambaa campaigns and we lost a lot of people… it is obvious if you call crowds, you will kill people.

So what is the political cost in the future if all we are going to do is to bury people? The political class should not be the cause of the problem, they rather should participate to be the solution,” said Kagwe.

Kagwe’s warning came in the wake of reports that an aspirant in Murang’a County had over the weekend conducted a Covid-19 vaccination camp at a local primary school with a view to gaining political mileage.

The aspirant is said to have colluded with a local vaccination centre to conduct the exercise which attracted hundreds of residents.

He would later declare in a Facebook post that his community support initiative had helped vaccinate over 1,000 residents of Gatanga ward at Gathaini Primary School. 

“I had a chance to persuade those who are undecided on taking the jab to consider it as it is safe,” he wrote.

“I also noted that a majority were receiving the first dose and I committed that after eight weeks, I will facilitate them to be given the second and final jab at the same location,” he added.

And yesterday, the government issued a stern warning to any persons with intentions to pilfer vaccines from Government facilities, they will face the full force of the law.

He warned health workers against colluding with outsiders to issue them with vaccines without the authority of the Ministry of Health, saying such a situation will lead to immediate disciplinary action.
