Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohammed has lauded the move to disband the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) special unit, though with a caveat.

Taking to his official Twitter account on Sunday, October 16, the legislator commended Acting Inspector General of police Noor Gabow for the decision, but prayed that the move will not lead to the formation of a new one with ‘ulterior motive’.

“This is very good bwana IG but we hope this is not the beginning of the formation of a NEW special unit loyal to the new regime under the command of Major General Oscar Sudi,” Junet wrote.

Special unit disbanded

The Special Service Unit (SSU) of the DCI was disbanded on Saturday, October 15, 2022, following a directive from Gabow.

“The DCI Special Service Unit (SSU) has been disbanded with immediate effect. This follows a directive from the Ag. IG Mr Noor Gabow,” DCI tweeted.

“All officers serving in the disbanded unit have been recalled to DCI Headquarters for further instructions,” DCI added.

DCI stated that the move would allow the National Police Service to prepare for the reorganisation of the new administration under Amin Mohammed Ibrahim who was appointed as DCI boss by President William Ruto.

The disbanded unit was created in December 2019 by ex-DCI boss George Kinoti.

It was comprised of highly trained officers who worked closely with the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) for information and intelligence sharing.
