June 27, 2025: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Attempted coup
The dust is yet to settle following Wednesday’s Gen Z-led nationwide protests that left at least 10 people dead and hundreds injured.
Today, political discourse is expected to remain heated after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen described the demonstrations as an attempted coup during a presser on Thursday.
Murkomen denied claims of police brutality, instead framing the events as acts of terrorism masked as dissent.
“We condemn the criminal anarchists who, in the name of peaceful demonstrations, unleashed violence, looting, sexual assault and destruction,” he said.
The Interior CS praised security forces for showing restraint under extreme provocation, crediting their response with averting what he termed a direct assault on constitutional order.
According to Murkomen, nine police stations were attacked—five torched—and five firearms stolen.
He reported more than 400 injuries, including 300 police officers, and widespread damage to both public and private property. Investigations into the casualties and destruction are ongoing.
Continued vigilance for protests
While there’s no specific call for major country-wide protests slated for today, the underlying political and social tensions following the widespread demonstrations on June 25th remain high.
Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence, and localised, spontaneous gatherings could still occur.
Spontaneous demonstrations may still erupt, particularly in hotspots affected by the June 25 unrest. A visible security presence is expected in major towns as authorities monitor the situation closely.
