Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Mask vendor shooting

Reactions are expected to dominate the news today about the point-blank shooting of an unarmed face mask hawker along Moi Avenue on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Boniface Kariuki, who is fighting for his life at the ICU wing of the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), was shot at close range by an anti-riot police officer, who has since been interdicted from service.

The officer, identified as Klinzy Barasa, was interdicted alongside another officer, identified as Duncan Kiprono, after the incident drew massive public condemnation.

The international community has equally mounted pressure on the government to expedite investigations leading to the charging of the police officers involved in the excessive use of force during demonstrations.

According to the KNH, at least 16 people were admitted to the facility on Wednesday, June 17, 2025, with various injuries sustained during the protests.

“In total, 16 patients were received at Kenyatta National Hospital as a result of the protest-related unrest,” KNH Acting CEO William Sigilai said.

“The injuries ranged from gunshot wounds to blunt trauma. Of these, 7 patients were admitted for further management, 9 were treated and discharged, 2 have undergone surgery, and 4 more are scheduled for surgical procedures today.”

“One other patient remains unidentified, having sustained a skull fracture reportedly from an assault. We commend the swift actions of first responders and the public who ensured the timely referral of casualties to KNH.”

Probe into Albert Ojwang’s murder

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is set to continue with its investigations into the brutal torture and murder of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’ at the Central Police Station.

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, IPOA secured an application to detain Central Police Station commander Samson Talaam for 15 more days to allow for more investigations into the death of the teacher.

Talaam was implicated in the murder by a police officer, James Mukhwana, who gave a blow-by-blow account of what may have transpired on the night of the murder of Ojwang’.

CCTV footage, which was found deleted, also points towards an elaborate plot to cover up the events that led to the murder.

So far, IPOA says they are halfway through with their investigations, which is far slower than the 7-day target set for them by the ODPP.
