Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

Albert Ojwang

The death of Albert Ojwang continues to dominate national conversation, with tensions expected to remain high today as the country awaits his final send-off.

Ojwang’s body was airlifted to Homa Bay on Thursday, following a deeply emotional memorial service held a day earlier at Ridgeways Baptist Church in Nairobi.

Mourners—family, friends, and supporters—gathered to honour the 31-year-old teacher and blogger whose life ended in controversial circumstances while in police custody.

But grief quickly turned to rage as the body landed in Homa Bay.

Furious residents stormed Mawego Police Station—where Ojwang was initially detained before being transferred to Nairobi—setting it ablaze in protest of what they termed a state-sanctioned execution.

Ojwang will be laid to rest on Friday, July 4, at his father’s home in Kakwonyo Village.

As the nation watches, his burial is expected to draw heavy public and media attention amid growing demands for justice and police accountability.

Ndiangui Kinyagia

The controversy surrounding Kinoo blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia is expected to continue dominating discussions today.

Kinyagia, who had earlier been reported missing and police blamed for his abduction, attracted criticism even from activists like Boniface Mwangi when he suddenly emerged, revealing that he had just been hiding.

Kinyagia resurfaced on July 3, 2025, and presented himself before the High Court at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.

His lawyer, Wahome Thuku, stated that Kinyagia had been in hiding in an undisclosed location since June 22, claiming he feared for his life after learning that Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers were looking for him over unspecified criminal allegations.

Opposition tour of Western

Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i and other opposition leaders will today embark on day two of their highly watched Western Kenya tour.

The primary message from this new ‘United Opposition’ team is to accuse President William Ruto of abandoning the Western region after using its votes to ascend to power.

They are telling residents that they were conned by the current administration.

The tour is covering various counties in Western Kenya, including Vihiga, Kakamega, Busia, and Bungoma.

Filing tax returns

Businesses and individual taxpayers across the country are today expected to flood the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) portal to file their tax returns, as the extended deadline fast approaches.

Originally set for June 30, the deadline was pushed to July 5, 2025, offering a brief reprieve for thousands who had not yet complied.

The extension came after mounting public pressure and a formal intervention by the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), also known as the Office of the Ombudsman, which urged the government to ease the burden on taxpayers facing technical challenges on the KRA platform.

Power outage

Kenya Power has announced a planned power outage scheduled for Friday, July 4, 2025, that will affect parts of four counties.

Parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Migori and Kilifi counties will experience power outages today.

Power outages in parts of four affected counties will occur at varying times during the day.
