After a long-day United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominations, Juja MP George Koimburi emerged the winner garnering 6,790 against his challenger Joseph Kang’ethe who closely followed him with 4,257 in results announced by the party returning officer Assumpta Njambi Mwangi.

Koimburi who has only served for about ten months was declared the winner qualifying him to fly the UDA ticket in the August 9 polls in an exercise that was marred by very low voter turnout that only saw 11,047 votes cast in a constituency that enjoys a population of 156,041 people, according to the 2019 census.

While releasing the results, Njambi upheld that the nomination exercise was done in a free and fair process and lauded the security organs for providing enough security that saw a prevalence of peace across all the polling centres.

“We had a very peaceful time and I congratulate all the contestants and especially the winners. It was a very free and fair exercise that was witnessed by agents and officers,” said Njambi.

Others who won at the ward level are Ngatha Wambiri in Murera ward, Geoffrey Mucheke in Kalimoni ward, David Macharia in Juja ward and Patrick Ngugi who won in Witeithie ward.

Speaking after the announcement of the results, Koimburi vowed to work together with his opponents whom he urged to remain loyal to the party to build its infrastructure.

The incumbent MP acclaimed other parties for keeping off UDA nominations saying that the party will as well not interfere with other parties’ primaries.

“I am excited and I thank Juja residents. We have heard very transparent nominations and in Juja, we never witnessed any forms of violence as we had very tight security provided by our officers,” he said.

On his part, Wambiri termed the UDA win as a new dawn for Murera ward vowing to turn around the infrastructural state of the populous ward for the better should he further bag the MCA position in August.

“I am excited and happy that Murera has got the leadership it’s been looking for. I am ready to fight for their rights after I’m given the full mandate on August 9 when I’m sure they will stamp my victory,” he said.

Phyllis Muthoni, the Juja Sub-County police commander who oversaw security operations during the exercise thanked voters for upholding peace and following the requisite electoral laws.
