Judiciary asks public to pick Sh28m bail cash it holds
Nyahururu law court is holding close to Sh30 million in unclaimed cash bails that have accumulated for over 25 years.
The court is appealing to owners to go for their money else it be handed over to Unclaimed Assets Authority.
Chief Magistrate Evans Keago said some of the unclaimed cash bails date back to 1996.
Collect the money
“We are appealing to the owners to collect the money or we will hand it over to Unclaimed Assets Authority (UAA),” the Magistrate said during a court users’ committee meeting held at the Nyahururu Sports Club in Nyahururu town, Laikipia County.
Keago, who is the head of station, said that failure to collect the amount in the shortest time possible will result in the court surrendering the money to UAA. The uncollected bail cash stood at Sh28, 072,854 as at April this year.
“The Unclaimed Assets Authority has a directive that within three years if the amount is not collected, it should be surrendered to the authority.
“We have the files but we do not have the contacts of the depositors and we are appealing to the deputy county commissioners to help us in sensitizing the public on the uncollected deposits,” said the Chief Magistrate.
