January 30, 2024: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
1. Spotlight on schools over audit queries
Secondary schools are set to get the spotlight after Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu‘s report claimed some of them charge extra fees without the approval of the Ministry of Education.
The audit conducted by Gathungu’s office unearthed unsupported and unaccounted capitations and grants advanced to schools for the construction of various development projects.
Gathungu’s audit report covered the periods 2021, 2022, and 2023, and it also faulted schools for illegally transferring money to the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association’s (KSSHA) kitty.
The association, which is a welfare organisation bringing together school heads only, is not defined by government funding.
The audit report comes at a time when the national government has been criticized for not releasing funds to schools, raising fears that heads will raise school fees to cater for the running of those institutions.
Stakeholders and political leaders are expected to raise their voices concerning the latest queries by the auditor general.
2. Former NMS officials summoned
After Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Nairobi summoned the Director-General of the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS), Lieutenant-General Mohammed Badi, and former top State House official Kinuthia Mbugua, the political heat is expected to rise at City Hall.
Mbadi, Kinuthia, former Head of Treasury at the NMS, Constance Mwaikamba, and Major John Njoroge, who was seconded to the NMS, have been summoned in connection with the ongoing investigations into revenue collection.
They will be required to clarify the nature, ownership, and operations of the controversial Nairobi Revenue System.
The summons can potentially divide Nairobi MCAs into their political groups, Kenya Kwanza vs Azimio la Umoja, given that Badi and NMS were Uhuru’s appointees and project.
3. AFCON show continues
The Africa Cup of Nations will conclude its quarter-final matches today with two games lined up.
West African nations Mali and Burkina Faso will clash in the first match before Morocco and South Africa meet in the second one.
Given the amount of entertainment the past games have provided, fans are expecting even more as the tournament speeds towards the ultimate stage.
