Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.

DR Congo conflict

The East Africa Community heads of state are set to hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, after rioters protesting in the Democratic Republic of Congo attacked the Kenyan and Uganda embassies with planned assaults on the South African, US and Belgian Embassies in Kinshasa on Tuesday evening, January 28, 2025.

President William Ruto will chair the meeting.

Following the attack, Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’oei urged Kenyans in DR Congo to be extra cautious during this period.

“This development is a serious breach of international law and we condemn it in the strongest terms possible. We call on authorities in DRC to take appropriate action. We implore Kenyan citizens and business people to exercise caution during this period,” PS Korir said.

Mid-term retreat for MPs

The National Assembly‘s mid-term retreat enters its second day today with the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi expected to engage MPs on matters relating to the economy including the current state of economic affairs in the country. The MPs are expected to discuss the Social Health Act and the Digital Health Act among other issues.

During the opening, the National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced that 18 committees needed immediate restructuring when House business resumed.

“I hereby direct the Majority Leader and the Minority Leader to move in earnest and reconstruct the 18 committees whose life has come to an end with the last session.

“Now get ready to bring to House Business the new list of members to various committees, so that we can process and have new leadership or continued leadership with the committees taking into account, as you say, performance, regular attendance of committee meetings, and the industry to which you put in those attendances,” Speaker Wetang’ula stated during the official opening of the 2025 mid-term retreat for members of the national assembly.

Weather outlook

In the latest weather advisory, the Kenya Meteorological Department announced that rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the southeastern lowlands and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley.

Kenya Met predicted that morning rains are expected over a few places, with afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms likely to occur over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places.

These are the areas of Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, and Homabay, and Migori, Narok, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi Counties.
