Some Isiolo residents from various ethnic groups have slammed the move by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo without proper consultation.

The residents have called for the withdrawal of the notice of motion for impeachment to pave the way for arbitration by elders to resolve any outstanding issues.

On Monday, June 9, 2025, Sericho Ward MCA Abubakar Godana tabled the notice of motion to impeach Governor Guyo on grounds of abuse of office, financial mismanagement and gross misconduct.

The motion has received support from 16 out of 18 MCAs, who have since retreated to an unknown location ahead of the motion debate scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

On June 15, 2025, local Isiolo community members led by Somali Council of Elders Secretary General Idle Hassan, Gabra Council of Elders Chairperson Omar Godana and the Alternative Justice System (AJS) Chairperson for the Samburu Council of Elders Joyce Nairisiae faulted the move by the MCAs and accused them of bypassing all other avenues of dispute resolution and opting to impeach the Governor even without consulting their elders and electorate at the ward level.

“Impeachment should always be the last point of call after all other interventions fail to bear fruit,” Hassan said.

Omar Godana, on the other hand, called for intervention by President William Ruto, claiming that the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Governor Guyo were influenced by external forces/political influence from a neighbouring county.

“Caution needs to be exercised to ensure that Isiolo does not slide into ethnic chaos courtesy of influence from outside in internal political affairs,” Godana said.

The AJS Chairperson for the Samburu Council of Elders, Joyce Nairisiae, noted that Isiolo had made significant steps in alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, hence MCAs should have given dialogue a chance before proceeding with the impeachment.

Lydia Ntinyari, a resident of Bulapesa area, warned the MCAs that they are not acting on behalf of the local community members who elected them, since they resulted in beginning impeachment proceedings without engaging members of the public.

They called for the immediate withdrawal of the impeachment motion that is set to be debated on Tuesday to pave the way for arbitration and enable Governor Guyo to make amends wherever he may have wronged the MCAs.
