Isaac Rutto demands urgent intervention after tragic accident on Bomet-Narok Road

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Vice Chairperson Isaac Rutto has called for immediate safety interventions for traders operating along busy roads following a tragic incident at Kipsarwet Trading Centre.

Speaking after visiting the family of the deceased trader alongside Nyongores Ward MCA Joseah Samoei on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Rutto described the accident as deeply painful and disturbing.

“The tragic incident that occurred recently at Kipsarwet Trading Centre along the Bomet – Narok road, where a heavy lorry lost control, leading to the loss of one trader’s life and leaving three others injured, remains deeply painful and disturbing,” he said.

Rutto emphasised the urgent need for preventive measures to ensure that such accidents do not repeat. “As we continue to keep the bereaved family and the survivors in our prayers, it is clear that there is an urgent need for proper measures to guarantee the safety of traders in busy centres along our roads,” he said.

He further noted that earning a livelihood should never come at the risk of losing one’s life. “No one should lose their life in the simple act of earning a livelihood,” Rutto said, urging the government and relevant authorities to take immediate action to safeguard people conducting business near highways.

During their visit to the Kipsarwet family, Rutto and MCA Samoei consoled the bereaved, assuring them that steps would be taken to prevent further tragedies. The delegation also inspected the trading centre to assess potential hazards and identify measures that could protect traders from road accidents.

Residents in the area have raised concerns over heavy vehicles speeding through trading zones and the lack of designated pedestrian walkways, factors that have contributed to accidents in the past.

Rutto’s call comes at a time when Kenya continues to grapple with road safety challenges, particularly in areas where commerce intersects with major highways. His message highlights the importance of structured interventions to protect livelihoods while preventing unnecessary loss of life.

As investigations into the Kipsarwet accident continue, traders and local leaders are hopeful that Rutto’s push will spur government action to implement safety regulations along high-risk trading corridors.
