Isaac Mwaura warns politicians against fueling division after Kahiga’s remarks
Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has condemned the remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga regarding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 22, 2025, Mwaura called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to summon Governor Kahiga for questioning and ensure he faces the consequences of promoting ethnic hatred.
He said the government had noted with deep concern the unpatriotic and divisive remarks made by the governor, terming them regrettable and unfortunate, especially at a time when the country is mourning the death of Raila Odinga, a respected statesman and one of Kenya’s founding pillars of democracy.
Mwaura stated that the government condemns such insensitive and disrespectful statements, which undermine the spirit of national unity.

He emphasized that under President William Ruto’s leadership, every devolved unit receives its rightful share of national resources, adding that the President continues to serve all Kenyans equally, regardless of their political affiliation.
He urged political leaders to avoid using hate speech and instead embrace unity and peace during this period of national mourning.
Mwaura reminded leaders that while differing opinions are normal in a democracy, Kenya belongs to all its citizens, and leaders must act responsibly to uphold the values of the Constitution.
Call to action
The spokesman also noted that the government had welcomed Governor Kahiga’s resignation as vice chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG).
He reiterated the government’s call for NCIC and DCI to take stern action against any leader found promoting ethnic division, in line with Section 13 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (NCIA) and other relevant laws.

“We take note and welcome the resignation of the Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga as the vice chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG). And strongly urge NCIC and DCI to take stern action against any leader found fanning division and ethnic animosity as per the provisions of the Constitution of Kenya on hate speech primarily found in section 13 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (NCIA) and other relevant laws.” Wanga said
This comes at a time when Governor Mutahi Kahiga is facing widespread criticism for remarks he made in vernacular that appeared to celebrate the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
