Energy Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma has said that a team of investigators are reviewing the integrity of the electricity transmission infrastructure in the country with a view of correcting anomalies that could have led to Tuesday, January 11 nationwide power blackout.

Juma spoke after touring the scene where three electricity transmission towers collapsed at Imara Daima in Nairobi leading to the nationwide power outage.

In her address to the press, the CS said measures have been taken to ensure the wayleave of the electricity transmission towers is respected after assessing the vandalism and encroachment that led to their collapse.

“If this is a wayleave then we are going to deal with all those issues to make sure that the wayleave is developed because of the risk it can cause to those leaving nearby,” Juma said.

During her assessment tour of the site, Juma visited Steven’s High School where one of the electricity transmission towers collapsed on the roof of one of its buildings sending teachers and students into a panic mode.

“I will take the matter of the school to the attention of CS Magoha (Education) who I am sure has ways of dealing with that and we are going to deal with all those issues to make sure that the wayleave is developed to be protected because of the risk it poses to those who live nearby if something like this happens,” Juma said.
