Interior PS meets police chiefs to review security plans for upcoming CHAN games

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, held a closed-door meeting with senior police commanders from Nairobi to assess the security readiness for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.

The meeting, which brought together key figures in the country’s security and sports sectors, focused on evaluating the operational strategies being put in place to guarantee safety throughout the tournament scheduled to begin in August.

“Received a comprehensive security briefing from the National Police Service (NPS) and the Nairobi Regional Command on the state of preparedness for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, which kicks off in August, 2025.” Said Omollo.

According to Omollo, the briefing from the National Police Service and the Nairobi Regional Command provided an overview of a coordinated security plan that involves multiple agencies. The strategy includes the participation of the National Police Service, specialised units, emergency response teams, and tournament organisers.

“The briefing outlined a well-coordinated security strategy anchored on a multi-agency approach, bringing together the National Police Service, specialised security units, emergency response teams and event organisers.” He added.

This joint framework is aimed at ensuring a secure environment for players, fans, officials, and all other stakeholders during the CHAN matches.

Also in attendance were Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, and FKF CEO Harold Ndege.

Handing over of Kasarani

This comes days after Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya officially handed over the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to the Local Organising Committee (LOC), declaring Kenya fully prepared to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025, scheduled for August.

In a statement posted on his X account on Monday, June 30, 2025, Mvurya described the handover ceremony as a critical milestone in Kenya’s preparations for the continental tournament.

“I have today officially handed over the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to the Local Organising Committee, marking a critical milestone as we accelerate preparations for the African Nations Championship scheduled for August 2025,” Mvurya stated.

He noted that the stadium, along with its two adjacent training grounds, had undergone extensive renovations in line with recommendations from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following routine inspections.

“The handover follows extensive refurbishments carried out in line with recommendations by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) during their routine inspections, a clear indication that Kenya is in top gear and fully prepared to host the tournament,” Mvurya explained.
