Inside Nairobi County’s Ksh43.6B budget
The Nairobi City County has unveiled a Ksh43.6 billion budget for the 2024/2025 Financial Year.
The budget by Governor Johnson Sakaja‘s administration is the highest ever approved by the county government.
Finance CECM Charles Kerich, while tabling the budget before the County Assembly, revealed that at least Ksh200 million had been set aside for non-pharmaceuticals. Also, Ksh1 billion has been allocated to construct, equip, and rehabilitate health facilities.
Kerich says Ksh1.95 billion has been allocated to ward-based projects which include the upgrade of local infrastructure, including roads, drainage systems, and public facilities.
Nairobi feeding programme
Ksh800 million has been allocated for the feeding program in public primary schools and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres.
“This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 310,000 children, ensuring they receive nutritious meals and can focus on their studies,” Kerich revealed.
The county government has allocated Ksh838 million towards the construction and rehabilitation of markets.
“Additional funds will be used for tree planting, beautification projects, and the completion of parks and other public amenities, enhancing the county’s aesthetic appeal and environmental health,” Kerich revealed.
At least Ksh120 million has been earmarked for the construction of fire stations in Kangemi, Jamhuri, and Gikomba.
According to Kerich, the county treasury projects an income of Ksh20.6 billion from internal sources and Ksh22.5 billion from external sources.
The county projects to collect Ksh20 billion during the year to supplement the Ksh22.6 billion expected to be disbursed from the national government.
Kerich has promised that there will be no increase in fees and charges for the 2024/2025 Financial Year.
“The county will focus on enhancing revenue collection by ensuring businesses comply with licensing requirements. The decision aims to alleviate financial pressure on residents while still funding critical development projects,” Kerich said.
The county has also allocated Ksh287 million for the completion of the construction of Borough offices, Sub-County and Ward offices.
“The Boroughs will be the focal point for planning and will provide a ‘One Stop Shop’ where the residents can access all the services offered by the Nairobi City County. This will ultimately reduce the time taken for Nairobians to get the services and ultimately the cost of doing business,” Kerich said.
Ksh826 million has been earmarked for the construction and rehabilitation of stadiums in Nairobi County.
At least Ksh857 million will be used to give bursaries to needy students in the county, with each ward getting Ksh7 million.
“Out of this Ksh7 million will be allocated to every ward and the balance will be available to sponsor all continuing students under the Executive Scholarship Programme,” Kerich said.
