The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has joined Kenyans and the African continent in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a true Pan-Africanist and one of Africa’s most iconic sons.

In a heartfelt statement posted on X on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the IGAD Secretariat, led by Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu, said Raila’s life represented a tireless commitment to justice, democracy, and unity across the continent. “Today, Africa mourns the loss of one of its most iconic sons, Raila Amolo Odinga,” the statement read.

Gebeyehu described Raila as an unwavering Pan-Africanist whose life’s work went beyond the borders of Kenya, inspiring generations in Africa and beyond. “He dedicated his life to the pursuit of democracy, justice, and unity. His lifelong struggle for freedom and equality inspired generations across Kenya and beyond, reminding us that leadership is not about power, but about service and sacrifice,” he stated

The regional bloc said Raila’s legacy will remain deeply rooted in Africa’s democratic progress and in the hope he gave millions who believed in a better, fairer continent. “His legacy will forever echo in the democratic foundations he helped build and in the enduring hope he instilled across our continent,” IGAD said.

Gebeyehu also expressed solidarity with Kenyans during this difficult period, noting that Raila’s contribution to good governance and regional peace had elevated Kenya’s place in Africa’s political and social landscape. “IGAD stands with the people and Government of Kenya in this moment of profound sorrow,” the statement added.

From the push for democratic reforms in Kenya to his advocacy for African integration, Raila’s name became synonymous with resilience and reform.

As Kenya and Africa continue to reflect on his passing, IGAD said his story will remain a source of inspiration to future generations striving for freedom and equality. “May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his example continue to guide us toward a freer and more united Africa,” the statement concluded.

Raila’s death has united the continent in grief and reflection, a testament to the mark he left on Africa’s democratic journey.
