The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Judiciary have reaffirmed their commitment to work closely in preparation for the 2027 General Election, aiming to ensure credible, transparent, and peaceful polls. IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon made the announcement following a courtesy call to the Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, Justice Martha Koome.

“Together with my fellow Commissioners, I paid a courtesy call on the Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court, Lady Justice Martha Koome. Our discussions centred on how IEBC and the Judiciary can work hand in hand in readiness for the 2027 General Election,” Ethekon said in a post on his official X account dated Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Ethekon highlighted the critical role of the Judiciary, particularly the Judiciary Committee on Elections (JCE), in resolving electoral disputes.

“I emphasised the vital role played by the Judiciary, particularly the Judiciary Committee on Elections (JCE), in ensuring that electoral disputes are resolved fairly, transparently, and on time. This partnership is critical to strengthening public trust in the electoral process,” he added.

During the meeting, Chief Justice Koome, alongside Justice Njoki Ndungu (Chairperson of JCE) and Justice Daniel Musinga (Vice-Chairperson of JCE), congratulated the IEBC leadership on their appointments and pledged full support to the Commission’s mandate.

Looking forward, Ethekon stated that IEBC is committed to reviewing electoral laws and regulations to address challenges identified in previous elections.

“We aim to enhance collaboration with JCE to strengthen the Electoral Dispute Resolution framework, and develop training programs on electoral processes and dispute resolution,” he said.

The Chairperson also emphasised the importance of building the capacity of law enforcement agencies on electoral matters, engaging stakeholders and government bodies, and sensitising Judicial Officers on critical issues such as party list allocations.

“Our shared commitment is clear; to work together in delivering credible, transparent, and peaceful elections in 2027 for the people of Kenya,” Ethekon concluded, underscoring the strategic partnership as a cornerstone for strengthening electoral integrity.

The collaboration reflects a proactive approach to addressing election-related disputes early, boosting confidence in Kenya’s electoral processes, and establishing mechanisms for the timely and transparent resolution of grievances.

The IEBC–Judiciary partnership is set to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity of the 2027 elections, ensuring they reflect the will of the people while upholding peace and adherence to the rule of law.
