Housewife to serve 20 years in jail for killing estranged husband in feud
A house-wife accused of killing her estranged husband in cold blood over a domestic feud has been jailed for 20 years.
Liza Koima, a mother of two children, was convicted by Eldoret High Court Judge Reuben Nyakundi.
While delivering judgment, Justice Nyakundi who described the offence as serious, said the soul of the man of the house was cruelly lost by the action of the accused.
The Judge further noted in his judgment that even after committing the offence, the accused did not see it fit by reaching out to the family f the slain deceased, Abraham Lagat to ask for forgiveness.
“I have considered all factors and found that Koima was linked to the gruesome murder of her husband. I sentence the accused to serve 20 years imprisonment,” said the Judge.
The slain businessman was murdered on August 27, 2020 at their house in Kipkorgot estate along the Eldoret-Ravine road in Uasin Gishu county in an incident where she was arrested by police officers as a prime suspect.
In her defence, the accused shocked the packed court when she confessed to her involvement in the tragic murder of the deceased saying she acted in self-defence.
Koima recounted how she hit her late husband on the head with a blunt object resulting in his demise following a scuffle that ensued in their bedroom on the fateful day.
She explained that it was her late husband who started beating her with a blunt object after a drinking spree and that she overpowered him in the ensuing fight by grabbing the weapon from his hand and hitting him on the head in self-defence.
Koima in her defense also revealed that the circumstances leading to her action stemmed from what she described as nagging demands for an unspecified amount of money the deceased wanted from her to venture into large scale farming in Narok County.
“My late husband came home from a drinking spree and asked me to give him an unspecified amount of money saying that he wanted to venture into large scale wheat farming in Narok. When I told him that I don’t have any money, he became angry and started a fight with me,” said Koima.
