Homa Bay Speaker Julius Gaya yesterday resigned as the Homa Bay county Assembly Speaker a head of a planned tabling of an impeachment motion against him.

Gaya who served as the third speaker of the Assembly, tendered his resignation to the Assembly acting clerk Hannington Abeka Day.

Presiding over the sittings, the deputy Speaker Samuel Okings Okomo confirmed that he had received the resignation of Gaya through the County clerk yesterday therefore declared the seat vacant.

“I am in receipt of the of the resignation letter of Hon Julius Odhiambo Gaya as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Homa Bay addressed to the clerk pursuant to the provision of the standing order no 14a (1),” the deputy speaker notified the members.

“Gaya appreciates the opportunity you gave him to serve this house as the third speaker having been elected on 21 September 2022,” reads the letter.

“I therefore notify this house on resignation pursuant to the provision of the standing order no 14 a (3) and declare the office of the speaker vacant,” said Okings.

Gaya served as the Central Kachuonyo MCA for two terms under the tenure of the County former Governor Cyprian Awiti before he could get the Speakers position.

Gaya dropped his third quest for the Central Karachuonyo MCA after he supported the election of the current Governor Gladys Wanga before he could be rewarded wit the seat

According to the majority leader Richard Ogindo, out of the 54 members of the County Assembly Majority 53 had already signed the petition in support of Gaya’s impeachment motion.

He however thanked the former Speaker for taking the bold and bravely move before the impeachment motion could be tabled before the houses.

“On behalf of all members to appreciate our former speaker Hon Julis Gaya for the brave move he has undertaken by handing in his resignation letter,” said Ogindo.

“Out of 54 members only Member was against the petition to remove him from the Office and by deciding to resign was the best move before this house could not table the impeachment motion against him,” said the majority leader.
