Homa Bay ready to host Madaraka Day
By Zadock Angira, May 20, 2025All the necessary arrangements and infrastructural upgrades have been put in place for Homa Bay County to host the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations.
The Raila Odinga Stadium, which is the official venue for the national event, is now a 12,000-seater facility, following joint efforts by the county and national governments.
On Thursday last week, the National Celebrations Steering Committee visited the stadium to inspect ongoing preparations. New terraces and modern amenities are being installed to ensure that the facility meets national standards.
President William Ruto is expected to officially open various national and county government projects, which are currently underway, including the affordable housing units, Homa Bay pier, and improved fish landing sites and markets, among others.
This year’s Madaraka Day will focus on the Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs will feature a three-day conference, to be opened by the Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and concluded by President William Ruto, on the last day.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) have commenced works on two major roads leading into the town. Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has also upgraded Kabunde Airstrip for the event, with continued works on the apron and the upcoming terminal building. This enhancement will enable the airstrip to handle larger aircraft, including the Embraer, ensuring seamless travel for high-level dignitaries.
Equally, Kenya Power has advanced street lighting installations, and the county government is improving water access to key venues and residential areas.
Historic celebrations
Internal Security Principal Secretary, who chairs the National Celebrations Steering Committee, said much has been achieved following the collaboration between national agencies and the county government.
“The most strategic parts of what Kenya is doing will be ready ahead of Madaraka Day. We are inviting and encouraging everyone from Homa Bay and across the country to be part of these historic celebrations,” Raymond Omollo said.
On Thursday, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya; PS Umi Bashir (Culture), PS Elijah Mwangi (Sports), PS Betsy Njagi (Blue Economy), and Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura visited Homa Bay to assess the preparations.
They were also accompanied by Dennis Itumbi, who heads the thematic coordination of national celebrations, Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa, County Commissioner Moses Lilan, as well as security, intelligence, and technical teams from relevant ministries and agencies.
The decision to hold national celebrations in the counties enables Kenyans to celebrate the cultural diversity and strengthen our nationhood.
Previously, they have been held at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kericho, Green Stadium in Embu, and Kwale Stadium, among others.
