Govt promises action after viral video of woman filmed at a Nairobi club

The government has spoken out after a disturbing video of a woman filmed at a Nairobi entertainment establishment circulated widely on social media, sparking public outrage and concern over dignity and consent.

In a statement issued on X on Sunday, January 18, 2026, by the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture and Children Services, Hanna Wendot acknowledged awareness of the video and raised concern over how the images were recorded and shared, noting the woman appeared to be in a vulnerable situation.

“I have taken note of a disturbing video circulating in the public domain involving the recording and dissemination of images of a woman in a vulnerable condition within a Nairobi entertainment establishment,” part of the Ministry of Gender, Culture and childern services statement reads.

The Ministry went on to restate the rights guaranteed to every person under the Constitution, emphasising that dignity and privacy must be respected at all times, both offline and online.

“The Ministry reaffirms that the dignity, privacy and bodily autonomy of every person are inviolable and are guaranteed under the Constitution of Kenya. Any conduct that undermines these rights, whether through action, omission or digital transmission, is unacceptable,” the statement reads.

Addressing the circumstances under which the video was recorded and shared, the Ministry pointed to serious questions around consent, responsibility and ethical conduct, especially in places where people may be exposed or at risk.

“The circumstances surrounding the recording and distribution of this material raise serious concerns regarding consent, responsible conduct and compliance with existing legal and ethical standards, particularly in environments where individuals may be vulnerable,” the statement reads.

The Ministry further disclosed that government agencies have been brought in to look into the matter and determine the appropriate legal steps.

“The Ministry is engaging relevant agencies to review the matter within their respective mandates. Appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law,” the statement reads.

Members of the public were also urged to avoid sharing the video or making comments that could worsen the harm already caused.

“We urge members of the public to exercise restraint and responsibility by refraining from the further circulation of such material and by avoiding commentary that may occasion additional harm,” the statement reads.

The statement concluded with an assurance of the government’s commitment to protecting human dignity and upholding the rule of law in both physical and digital spaces.

“The Government remains fully committed to the protection of human dignity and to the advancement of a society founded on respect, accountability and the rule of law, both offline and online,” the ministry said.
