Govt announces 1:1 textbook ratio for Grade 10 learners
By Kiprono Keileb, January 22, 2026The Ministry of Education has confirmed that all Grade 10 learners will now receive one core textbook each, part of the government’s drive to ensure equitable access to learning materials across the country.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba flagged off the nationwide distribution of 11,867,325 textbooks at English Press Ltd in Nairobi on Thursday, January 22, 2026, emphasising the importance of timely learning resources for senior students.
He said the textbooks are being delivered to schools yet to receive them, with all Senior Schools expected to be fully stocked by the end of the month.

“As part of ongoing efforts to enhance access to quality education, the Government continues to provide core textbooks to learners at a ratio of one book per learner,” part of CS Ogamba’s statement on X reads.
He added that the initiative is aimed at supporting effective teaching and learning, especially for students preparing for national examinations.
“For Grade 10 learners, the Ministry of Education has procured a total of 11,867,325 textbooks for distribution to schools across the country,” he said.

CS Ogamba also met with members of the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) Council during the flag-off ceremony, noting the role of publishers in ensuring that learning materials reach every student on time.
“This afternoon, I visited English Press Ltd in Nairobi, where I met with members of the Kenya Publishers Association (KPA) Council and officially flagged off the distribution of textbooks to regions yet to be covered,” part of Ogamba’s statement on X reads.

The government says the one-to-one textbook ratio will help reduce the shortage of learning materials, eliminate sharing that slows down lessons, and guarantee that every student has the necessary resources to succeed academically.
“All Senior Schools across the country are expected to receive Grade 10 textbooks by the end of this month, ensuring timely support for effective learning and teaching,” CS Ogamba said.
