Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has called for swift investigations into the brutal killing of Hannington Were, the son of former Matungu Member of Parliament (MP) David Aoko Were, who was attacked and killed in Kisumu.

In his condolence message shared via his official Facebook account on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Barasa described the incident as tragic and urged security agencies to move with speed to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

Call for swift justice

The governor said the circumstances surrounding the killing were deeply disturbing and demanded urgent attention from law enforcement authorities.

“I convey my heartfelt condolences to former Matungu MP Hon. David Were and his family following the brutal murder of his son, the late Hannington Were,” Barasa said.

He added that justice must be served without delay to offer closure to the grieving family and restore public confidence in security operations.

“I call upon the police to expedite investigations and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he stated.

Concern over insecurity

The killing of Hannington Were has sparked renewed concern, with the ex-MP demanding urgent and thorough investigations after the shocking killing of his second son within four months, describing the repeated tragedies as part of a disturbing pattern of unresolved violence and rising insecurity.

Speaking emotionally at Kwee Funeral Home in Kisumu on May 24, 2026 Were said that the family is now living in fear, noting that the latest killing comes just months after another of his sons was also murdered under unclear circumstances.

According to the former legislator, Hannington had left home with friends at night in search of food when they encountered individuals on boda bodas around the Mamba area.

He claimed that his son was first assaulted with a blunt object before later being found bleeding with deep stab wounds.

“They told me he had been stabbed twice and had lost a lot of blood. The doctor said the excessive bleeding is what killed him,” Were stated.

The former MP said the latest killing has reopened painful wounds, coming barely four months after another son was also killed in January in what remains an unresolved case.

“Within four months, I am going to bury two sons. One was killed in Nairobi by his neighbour, and now another has been killed. Up to now, no arrests have been made and no justice has been served,” he lamented.

Were also revealed that he himself survived an attack in May 2023 near the Lake Basin area in Kisumu, an incident he says was reported but never properly investigated.
