Former Matungu Member of Parliament (MP) David Aoko Were is mourning the death of his son, Hannington Were, who was killed during a night attack in Kisumu on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

According to reports, Hannington, 39, was in the company of a friend when they were attacked by assailants riding on a motorbike while walking towards Mamba Hotel to buy food.

Victim pronounced dead on arrival

The two victims were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) following the attack.

However, Hannington was pronounced dead on arrival at the facility, while his friend survived the attack and remains admitted to the hospital, fighting for his life.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, May 24, 2026, the former ODM legislator said he had been informed by medical personnel that his son had suffered stab wounds during the incident.

Kule kwa hospitali naambiwa alipelekwa around saa nane ya usiku, na alipofika waliambiwa tayari alikuwa ashakufa. Ule ameniongelesha alisema alikuwa na stab wounds,” David Were said.

The former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP noted that he had received a distress call from his daughter-in-law, Hannington’s wife, informing him that his son had died after the attack.

Hannington’s body has been moved to Kwee Funeral Home in Kisumu.

Police launch investigations

Police have since launched investigations into the fatal attack as detectives seek to establish the motive behind the assault and identify those responsible.

The incident has shocked residents and leaders in the region, coming amid growing concerns over violent attacks in urban areas at night.

Family hit by another tragedy

The latest tragedy comes only months after David Were lost another son earlier this year.

In January 2026, his son Philemon Were died following another attack and was later buried on January 20, 2026.

Reports indicated that he had been attacked in Nairobi by his neighbour.

The back-to-back losses have left the family in mourning once again as relatives, friends, and political leaders continue sending messages of condolence to the former legislator.
