Ghost Mulee: Wanyama’s return as a player not good for Harambee Stars

Former Harambee Stars head coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee has said Victor Wanyama‘s return is not good for the national side.
The former Southampton midfielder returned to the fold after head coach Benni McCarthy named his squad for the upcoming friendly game against Chad.
Mulee says Wanyama should return for another role and not to play because it is time to give youngsters a chance to play for Harambee Stars.
“Unless he [Wanyama] is coming back to give the other players motivation, because he has enough experience, but about playing, I do not think it will be good for the team,” Mulee said on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in a morning show that he co-hosts.
“Because right now, in many teams, young players are the ones being used, so if he has come with his experience to give advice to the rest, then that is okay.
“I am the one who gave him his national team debut in 2007 when he was 15, and so he has served this country for a lot of years, and we respect that. Anyway, it is McCarthy who decides.”
“Maybe he [Wanyama] still feels he can contribute on the pitch, and if that is the case, then it is up to the coach to make the decision. Coach Benni McCarthy has named a provisional squad; it is not Victor Wanyama who has forced himself into the team,” he added.
Wanyama had announced he had retired from international football, but he has been named by the South African tactician.
His return has drawn much attention, with some supporting Wanyama’s Harambee Stars return while others say it is not necessary at all.
