A brace from former Kisumu All Starlets Talisman, Mercy Airo, and one each for Sheryl Angachi, Winnie Kanyotu and Elizabeth Wambui gave Women Premier League (WPL) side Gaspo Women a 5-1 win against varsity side Zetech Sparks yesterday.

With the two sides chasing their first win of the season, it was Gaspo, who finished the 2019 season in second place, that showed intent early, opening the scoring in the seventh minute through Wambui.

Angachi added to Zetech’s misery in the ninth minute with Airo making matters 3-0 in the 32nd minute.

Zetech pulled one back through Faith Machora in the 38 minute for the match to head to the breather on a 3-1 scoreline.

Airo, added her second of the match and Gaspo’s fourth four minutes after resumption.

Zetech had a chance to add to their count but lost numerous chances on goal. Kanyotu pit the match out of Zetech’s reach in the 82nd minute for the final 5-1 score.

“It has never happened that we lose two league opening matches in our history so losing to Thika Queens and Kayole Starlets came as a wake up call to everyone in the team.

We changed our approach in the match from power play to building up from defence and it has given us positive results,” said Gaspo coach Isaac Maluki.

Gaspo made four changes to the starting line up that lost 5-1 to Kayole on the weekend bringing in Judith Omondi for Vivian Akinyi on goal. Leah Andiema, Miriam Asandre and Quinter Awiti also started.

“We had to change our defence and goalkeeping lineup as those were our biggest undoing in the two losses.

We were struggling with transition from Defence to offence and the changes made a huge difference against Zetech,” Maluki explained adding that the win gives them momentum to win their remaining four matches he’s of the first leg then strategise for the return leg.
