Gachagua attends PCEA church in Kayole
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is in Kayole’s PCEA church for the Sunday, July 21, 2024, church service.
Gachagua is expected to later on in the day to address a raft of issues among them the elusive Mount Kenya region unity and the planned protests scheduled for Tuesday, July 24, 2024, by the Gen Zs.
The protests are set to happen following President William Ruto’s decision to reappoint six cabinet secretaries who were dismissed following widespread public outcry by the protesters.
On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Gachagua pleaded with the youth to halt their demonstrations, stating that the government had heard their calls and was working on their demands.
“Our sons and daughters, we have heard you, you have spoken clearly and we ask you to allow the government to implement what you have asked for,” Gachagua said at the Mwea PEFA church in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.
Gachagua also cautioned that criminals should not be allowed to infiltrate peaceful protests and cause the destruction of property.
For weeks, the youthful population in Kenya has participated in demonstrations to compel the Kenya Kwanza administration to sack all cabinet secretaries and create transparency and accountability in government.
On July 19, 2024, President William Ruto reinstated some of the sacked Cabinet Secretaries back in government, leading to mixed reactions among the youth.
They have planned protests beginning Tuesday, July 24, 2024, to express dissatisfaction with the recycling of old faces and the nomination of some CSs deemed to be allies of the previously sacked officials.
Gachagua calls for unity
Also, Gachagua is set to address the unity in his backyard after his tribal rhetoric had him alienated by a section of Mt Kenya elected leaders.
In his tour of Kirinyaga County on Saturday, July 20, 2024, all four MPs in the area skipped the event, including the County senator Kamau Murango who asked for an apology.
Gichugu MP Gichimu Githinji, Ndia MP George Kariuki, Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari and Mwea MP Mary Maingi were conspicuously absent, leaving Kirinyaga woman rep Njeri Maina to welcome the Deputy President.
Maina said it was a shame that the MPs did not show up, while Gachagua urged the legislators to spend more time at their constituencies if they are to be reelected in the 2027 polls.
“We have traitors in our region; they have no interest of the people at heart. They only think about their stomachs and they should be rejected,” Gachagua said.
