Mombasa: Fugitive rearrested, ordered to serve 7-year jail term afresh

By , February 9, 2023

A fugitive who has been on the run since 2014 has been re-arrested and will now have to serve a fresh seven-year jail term he had been handed.

Safari Sharrif Pombe escaped shortly after being convicted by the then-Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Richard Ondenyo.

He had been convicted over the offense of shop breaking and committing a felony.

He, however, escaped when the court had scheduled a date for his mitigation and sentencing.

Fugitive sentenced in absentia

The magistrate proceeded to send the accused to seven years in prison in absentia.

The court further issued a warrant of arrest which remained in force for nine years until the accused was nabbed by the detectives recently and re-arraigned in court.

Mombasa Senior resident Magistrate, Rita Orora ordered the accused to start serving the seven-year jail term that he would have completed in 2021.
