The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has urged filmmakers to focus on producing family-friendly content that can be monetised.
During a media briefing at the Creative in Arts and Film Literacy (CAFIL) Programme forum held at the Golf Hotel in Kakamega County, KFCB’s Acting CEO, Paskal Martin Opiyo, emphasised the advantages of creating audio-visual content rated GE (General Exhibition).
He said such content appeals to a broader audience, making it more suitable for family viewing and enhancing its monetization potential.
“Specifically, we’ll monetise content that is general expansion. They do not always monetise adult content. So for those two reasons, it is important for you to focus on content that allows you to benefit from the skills that you have.” Opiyo stated
In addition, Opiyo announced the development of a comprehensive handbook that incorporates insights from various regulatory bodies.
“So the first thing we did was to create a handbook. It’s called a regulator’s handbook, and it’s been developed specifically for the creatives in the arts and the film sector, and the content creators.
And in that handbook, they’re able to get all kinds of information. We have a number of regulators who have input in that book.” He said
These include the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), which oversees drone licensing, the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC), responsible for data protection regulations, the Kenya Copyright Board (Kecobo), which enforces copyright laws and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), which manages filming permits in national parks.
“This initiative aims to consolidate information scattered across different government departments, ensuring that filmmakers have easy access to essential resources and regulations needed to navigate the industry successfully.” Opiyo stated
