FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has ordered the relegation of Muhoroni Youth FC from the National Super League to the FKF Division One League due to involvement in match-fixing.

In a statement dated Friday, May 2, 2025, and sent to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the body confirmed receiving the orders to banish the club to the Division One league as a consequence.

“Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirms receipt of official communication from Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) regarding the relegation of Muhoroni Youth Football Club to Division One, following their involvement in match manipulation,” part of the statement read.

While registering support with development aimed at curbing match fixing in the country, FKF, through its Secretary General, Harold Ndege, maintained its zero tolerance stance on match fixing.

“We are committed to working closely with FIFA and other relevant bodies to root out this vice from Kenyan football. The Federation will continue to cooperate with all stakeholders to ensure that individuals and teams found guilty of engaging in match-fixing face the full consequences of their actions, in accordance with FIFA and FKF regulations,” the statement said.

FKF, while stating its commitment to fighting match manipulation, also sent out a warning of dire ramifications to individuals implicated in the vice.

“We are launching a full-scale war on match-fixing in collaboration with FIFA, CAF, and all relevant authorities. We cannot allow this vice to undermine the progress we are making to uplift the game. Anyone found culpable will face the full consequences of their actions,” Ndege affirmed.

The communication comes after FKF on Thursday, March 27, 2025, provisionally suspended Harambee Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper Patrick Matasi.

The experienced goalkeeper was handed a 90-day suspension following the emergence of videos implicating him in potential match-fixing activities that prompted FKF to launch formal investigations into the allegations.

In the statement, the federation announced that Matasi will not participate in any FKF-sanctioned events or competitions during the suspension period as investigations into the matter commence.

Muhoroni Youth

Founded in 2003, the club, based in the Awasi region of Muhoroni in Nyanza, gained promotion to Kenya’s top-flight league in 2011.

They made a remarkable rise on the stage, bringing to light a pool of football talents like former international Wellington Ochieng, Kennedy Rono Tash (now deceased), and Samuel Ndung’u, now at Murang’a Seal, among others.

The KPL side won the Kenya Premier League Top Eight Cup in 2016 after beating Gor Mahia FC in the final staged at Nyayo National Stadium.

The KPL outfit dropped back to the second-tier National Super League (NSL) on the final day of the 2024 season, where match-fixing proof has since come to bite them.
