Alert on Ebola

The Ministry of Health is on high alert after the discovery of the Ebola Virus in Uganda on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

In a statement on Friday, January 31, 2025, Health Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni noted that the government was aware of the discovery of the virus in Uganda and that entry points within Uganda have been secured for close screening of people moving in and out.

“The Ministry of Health’s attention has been drawn to a press statement by Uganda’s Ministry of Health that was released on 30th January 2025 confirming an outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease in Kampala, Uganda,” PS Muthoni noted.

“In view of this, we would like to assure the public that the Ministry of Health remains committed to protecting the health and safety of all Kenyans. Consequently, a rapid assessment of the country’s capacity to respond to a similar outbreak is underway, shortly after which a comprehensive plan will be developed to guide countrywide preparedness and response activities for Ebola. As a precautionary measure, surveillance systems have been enhanced in all counties and points of entry.”

Reactions to Kindiki’s comments on youth

Reactions to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s remarks on corruption and the Kenyan youth are among the news items expected to dominate headlines today.

Kindiki, while speaking at the Ollessos National Polytechnic in Nandi County on Friday, January 31, 2025, took a swipe at the youth, stating that they only complain about corruption because they lack the capacity to be corrupt.

“I know many young people complain about corruption, they complain about all sorts of things, yet they themselves are simply waiting for their turn to be corrupt. So we must condemn intergenerational corruption. Corruption by the older generation is corruption, and it is bad, but future corruption is just as bad because it will destroy our country tomorrow,” Kindiki stated.

The DP also urged the youth to be responsible custodians of the nation for the good of future generations.

“We will always be here to mentor you, but it takes two to tango. You must allow yourselves to be mentored. We could offer guidance, but one of the biggest concerns in the country right now is our moral fabric as a nation. I say this because I am speaking to young people. You are more powerful than us because you have greater knowledge, thanks to technology. You have better exposure. But you must allow yourselves to be mentored,” he added.

Continued reactions to Mlolongo abductees deaths

Continued calls to end youth abductions are expected today after two of the men reported missing were found dead.

Justus Musyimi and Martin Mwau, were among four individuals abducted in Mlolongo between December 16, 2024 and December 17, 2024.

The discoveries followed hours after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI director Mohammed Amin denied their involvement in the abductions when they finally appeared in court after snubbing court summons to explain the whereabouts of the men who went missing in December last year.

While appearing before Justice Chacha Mwita, Police IG Kanja stated that the three men were not in their custody but assured the court they were safe.

“I confirm that none of the men is in our custody. But I want to assure Kenyans they are safe,” he said.
