Veteran Radio Journalist Robin Njogu dies

Mourners paid tributes to veteran radio journalist Robin Njogu who died on Monday following Covid-19 related complications.

Njogu who by the time of his death was the Managing Editor(Radio) at Royal Media Services was mourned as “mentor, friend and a great workmate”.

He died at the Aga Khan Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

President Uhuru Kenyatta praised Njogu’s contribution to radio and mentorship to young journalists.

“Robin was an excellent journalist who mentored many young people in the Fourth Estate. We will forever cherish his skills and expertise in mass media, especially in radio where he has left a huge mark of excellence,” the President said.

The Head of State said Njogu was an innovative, resourceful and an open minded journalist whose contribution to the media will be cherished forever.

Deputy President William Ruto said Njogu was friendly and humble.

“Gentle, kind-hearted and steadfast, Njogu believed in the true values of journalism, and contributed immensely to the strengthening of quality reporting. His death is extremely devastating as it comes just days after he lost his dear mother,” wrote the DP on his Twitter handle.

Other leaders who mourned Robin are Cabinet Secretaries (CSs)Joe Mucheru(ICT), Farida Karoney(Land), Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr.

They described Mr. Njogu as a dedicated journalist. His contribution to the development of radio and online was mentioned greatly in the tributes.

Journalists who had worked with him remembered his contribution to their careers.

Royal Media journalist Teddy Eugene Otieno said Njogu made him make his debut as a radio news presenter.

“I first met Njogu in 2014 at Nation where I was working as a producer for a breakfast show. He saw my talent and told me to record business news. One day, he told me to read the news. Good thing is that he stood by me all time as I read the news,” recalled Teddy Otieno.
