Ex-MP David Were questions security agencies after back-to-back deaths of his sons
By Viola Kosome, May 24, 2026Former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were is demanding urgent and thorough investigations after the shocking killing of his second son within four months, describing the repeated tragedies as part of a disturbing pattern of unresolved violence and rising insecurity.
Were’s son, Hunnington Were, 39, who worked with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) in Kisumu, was found dead after what police believe was a violent attack involving unknown assailants.
Speaking emotionally at Kwee Funeral Home in Kisumu on May 24, 2026 Were said that the family is now living in fear, noting that the latest killing comes just months after another of his sons was also murdered under unclear circumstances.

According to the former legislator, Huntington had left home with friends in search of food at night when they encountered individuals in boda boda around the Mamba area.
He alleged that his son was first assaulted with a blunt object before later being found bleeding with deep stab wounds.
“They told me he had been stabbed twice and had lost a lot of blood. The doctor said the excessive bleeding is what killed him,” Were stated.
Second son killed in four months
The former MP said the latest killing has reopened painful wounds, coming barely four months after another son was also killed in January in what remains an unresolved case.
“Within four months, I am going to bury two sons. One was killed in Nairobi by his neighbour, and now another has been killed. Up to now, no arrests have been made and no justice has been served,” he lamented.
Were also revealed that he himself survived an attack in May 2023 near the Lake Basin area in Kisumu, an incident he says was reported but never properly investigated.

“I was left for dead. I still carry the scars. Three years later, nothing has happened. Now my son is dead and still there are no answers,” he said.
The grieving father said the tragedy comes barely four months after the killing of another son who died in January under circumstances that remain unresolved.
“Within four months, I am going to bury two sons. One was killed in Nairobi by his neighbour, and now another has been killed. Up to now, no arrests have been made and no justice has been served,” he lamented.
Were also recalled surviving an attack in May 2023 in Kisumu, where he was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants near the old Lake Basin area. He said despite reporting the matter, no suspects have ever been apprehended.
“I was left for dead. I still carry the scars. Three years later, nothing has happened. Now my son is dead and still there are no answers,” he said.
The former MP expressed concern over rising insecurity, especially in Kisumu, accusing security agencies of failing to protect citizens and thoroughly investigate violent crimes.
