Eugene Wamalwa appeals to IPOA over police attacks on opposition leaders
Democratic Action of Kenya Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has appealed to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take action on police officers involved in the violent disruption of rallies by opposition politicians.
Speaking on Monday, July 28, 2025, when he, in the company of other opposition leaders, reported an incident of excessive use of force to IPOA, Wamalwa implored IPOA chairman Isaack Hassan to act before the violence gets out of hand.
“The police are being used to intimidate, harass, and intimidate the opposition so that they are not able to go across the country selling their one-term agenda or whatever manifesto they believe in,” Wamalwa said.
Western tour violence
We are not just talking about Murang’a County; on the Western region tour, when I hosted our team, we did experience violence in Kakamega. Reports were made, and up to now, we have not received any feedback,” Wamalwa said.

“On the same day, we were also attacked in Bungoma County at a place called Chwele. When we called the County Commander to tell him that we were under attack, he told us to use another route.”
He also revealed that a former MCA, who was seen being roughed up by a group of goons, had lost his eye after the incident.
Eye gouged out
“In that attack, a former Motosiet MCA Bernard Aliang’ana lost his eye. His eye was gouged out in the violence in Chwele,” Wamalwa told IPOA.

“Other attacks have been made against us in Bukembe and Webuye, and those against Rigathi Gachagua at the PCEA church in Mwiki, consecration of the ACK bishop in Nyeri, during a burial in Limuru, and the loss of lives during protests.”
In response, the IPOA chairperson urged politicians to engage one another, noting that the pattern of attacks could get out of hand.
“As a former member of IEBC, I don’t like where it is going. It is going to get bad, and I think we need you as political leaders to find a way of engaging with your counterparts if you can,” Isaack Hassan said,” Hassan said.
