Ethekon says IEBC and political parties must unite to protect will of Kenyans
By Kiprono Keileb, September 28, 2025The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has called for closer collaboration with political parties, stressing the need for unity in safeguarding the will of Kenyans during elections.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon made the appeal during a meeting between the Commission and the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) that was held on Saturday, September 27, 2025. The forum, which is established under paragraph 9(2) of the Second Schedule of the IEBC Act, Cap 7C, and section 38 of the Political Parties Act, Cap 7D, is designed to enhance dialogue and cooperation between the electoral body, political parties, and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
According to Ethekon, the engagement sought to introduce the new Commission to political parties, share updates on preparations for upcoming by-elections, and provide timelines for the commencement of Continuous Voter Registration. The session also discussed how future interactions between the Commission and political parties would be structured to build trust and efficiency.

Speaking during the forum, Ethekon emphasised that both the IEBC and political parties had a shared duty to ensure that Kenya’s elections reflect the people’s will.
“We come together not as separate entities but as partners united by a common responsibility to protect the will of the Kenyan people through credible, peaceful and inclusive elections,” said Ethekon.
He further acknowledged the Commission’s journey since assuming office, noting that stakeholder engagement has been at the core of its mandate.
“We began by meeting the Steering Committee of the PPLC, recognising that every political party, regardless of size, plays a crucial role in fostering public trust in the electoral process. Hence, today’s plenary meeting is of great importance,” he noted.

The IEBC boss underscored that the Commission’s ability to deliver credible elections relies not only on its technical preparations but also on the support and collaboration of political actors. He said that strengthening this relationship would help foster confidence in Kenya’s democratic processes.
The meeting, which was supported by Elgia Afric, highlighted the importance of joint planning ahead of future electoral exercises. It set the stage for structured and continuous dialogue between the electoral body and political parties as the country prepares for the upcoming polls.
