The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended a man they described as a notorious fraudster and fake detective.

According to the commission, Shadrack Kariira Ndegwa was taken into custody on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Turraco Bar, located along Thika Road, and will face legal action for his alleged fraudulent activities.

EACC revelation

The EACC disclosed that Ndegwa had been masquerading as a high-ranking detective at the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and as an EACC detective, claiming the ability to influence or terminate corruption investigations against individuals under scrutiny.

“This week, the Commission arrested one Shadrack Kariira Ndegwa, a fraudster, and imposter who has been posing as a powerful senior detective at NIS and EACC, with a purported ability to terminate all manner of corruption investigations against any person, at any stage or sway matters under investigation in favour of the individuals under probe,” EACC said in a statement.

The commission further revealed that Ndegwa had deceived numerous high-ranking officials by convincing them that he held influential connections with heads of key security and law enforcement agencies in the country.

According to EACC, the suspect falsely claimed that a single phone call from him could manipulate various situations in favour of those under investigation.

The anti-graft body also noted that Ndegwa exploited his victims’ vulnerability, pretending to be investigating highly sensitive matters and possessing incriminating information about them. During negotiations for these bribes, he insisted that the amounts should cover his services and also serve as facilitation for discussions with influential figures.

“The fraudster dupes his victims, mostly high-ranking officials, into believing that he has top-notch connections with heads of key security and law enforcement agencies in the country and that by a single phone call, he can ’cause’ many things to happen.

“He has been contacting his victims pretending to be investigating ‘very sensitive matters and has information that incriminates them. He then demands millions of money from the victims in order to ‘assist’ them out of trouble. In negotiating for huge bribe amounts, he tells his victims that the amount needs to be sufficient to pay for his services and also facilitate his ‘talk with wakubwa‘,” the statement added.

EACC call

The EACC has urged anyone defrauded by the suspect to promptly report such cases to the commission for appropriate action.

“Any person defrauded by this individual or any other is requested to report the matter to EACC,” the statement concluded.
